I’m so excited to share with you guys that one of our images from Fiona & Chris’ engagement session is published in Exquisite Weddings Sept/Oct 2010 issue!  I feel really honored that the editor quoted me in the little paragraph on the left.    I love their engagement session – Fiona & Chris are just so adorable and I’m so glad that they got some magazine love!

But like any party, there’s always drama. Hops got P.O. fast and left, while Bun buns and June enjoyed munching on all the treats.

So here it is, my last and final post of Film is Not Dead Workshop. All images are shot with manual focusing on my Canon A-1 with a 50mm f/1.8 lens.

The B&W shots are from day one of the workshop.  I didn’t bring enough color film so I had to use my roll of B&W (Kodak Professional BW 400CN).  I’m so glad that the situation sort of forced me to use it because I love how they turned out.

Here are some shots from day 3 of the workshop.  It was a super bright day…and we shot right in the middle of the day.

As you can see, I’m not super good at shooting film yet.  I have every intention to get better though – both at metering and manual focusing.   If and when I do have some extra budget, I would love to invest in a better film camera.

My other goal for the next coming year is to shoot more personal stuff and have the attitude that I’m shooting for myself.  This is an important step for me to refine my own photography voice. Up until now, I think Orange Turtle already has its own distinct style.  But I want to refine it even more…and hopefully, at some point I can articulate my philosophy on photography.

Ventura cove is practically right next to Bahia Resort Hotel.  It was such a gorgeous day!

After the ceremony, we stole Kate and Jeff away for a few pics.

Kate’s favorite detail of her wedding wasn’t her dress, or any floral decoration.  It was her wedding cake and her cake topper! I’d have to agree that her lego wedding cake topper is pretty awesome.

Kate & Jeff, thank you so much for having us at your wedding and loving us too! We felt so loved and blessed by you guys and by your family! It was such a fun wedding.  Congrats again!

A week had passed since I lasted posted the first roll of film shots that I taken at Film Is Not Dead Workshop.   Last Friday, I got some prints+scans back from Richard photo Lab and I looooove the result!   I feel really encouraged that these images turned out so nicely despite the fact I didn’t have any experience shooting in film, and that I didn’t have a fancy film camera.

All the images below are shot with Canon A-1 with Fuji Pro 400H.

I love the look of film.  I love how it doesn’t blow out the highlights and how much details it retains from the image.  I love that I don’t have to do any post-processing to make the images dreamy.

This workshop had challenged me on so many levels. I signed up for this workshop because shooting with film is something that I have never done before, so I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone.  Being a 100% digital shooter, it was sure uncomfortable for me to be shooting film, not knowing if I have gotten ‘the shot’ or not!  But I also learned that while shooting film has it own challenges, it is also easier than shooting with a digital SLR in some other ways.

Aside from all the technical stuff that I’ve learned, I was also challenged to refine my vision for photography.  What exactly is wedding photography to me? What is it that I want to communicate through the images that I capture and create?  One thing I did realize is that in the past 3 years, in my attempt to get better in photography, I often look outward for inspirations.  I look at blogs after blogs and check out what other people are doing.  I let others define what my photography need to be.  With so many amazing photographers out there, sometimes I really wonder if there is a point to MY photography.  At this point of my career, I’m ready to focus inward more and find my own voice.

Daniel and I have shot three weddings since I have attended the workshop.  I realized that the moment I started shooting for myself and trusting my own vision (and trusting that my clients will love my vision), my work was improved and I was a lot less stressed out during the wedding.   I’m not sure if you can tell if there’s any differences in my work from before and after the workshop but I guess it doesn’t really matter.  What matter most is that I feel different.  I feel a new sense of freedom when I shoot and a new sense of connection with the images that I create.
